The device is a digital overspeed protection device that utilizes three magnetic pickups connected to three separate speed sensing units to continuously monitor the prime mover speed in case of overspeed or signal loss. The Model 8200-205 is the 220 Vac input, power trip version of the Woodward ProTech family.
These devices can only switch between PROGRAM and MONITOR modes with keystroke lock access, preventing unauthorized changes. The ProTech 203 8200-205 system has two turbine start-up methods. One method provides separate start and reset functions; Another approach provides a combined start/reset function.
Application ProTech 203 8200-205 Overspeed protectors protect steam turbines, gas turbines or engines from overspeed by monitoring three separate speed sensors. The overspeed protector replaces the mechanical overspeed protector, especially in high speed (>10000rpm) applications where the mechanical overspeed protector is no longer reliable.
8200-205 Advantages Easy calibration testing, high accuracy and repeatability are notable features of this overspeed protector. ProTech 203 does not need to give sufficient allowance for overspeed stop speed values as mechanical overspeed protection devices do. The ProTech 203 uses digital speed sensing technology to easily set shutdown speed limits through panel operation. In order to ensure normal function and maintain good accuracy, any of the three units can be tested by a frequency generator while the turbine is in operation. The setting of the key switch ensures the permission of unauthorized persons to program and test. The accuracy of the three digital units sensing and displaying speed is 0.1%, and the accuracy of the mechanical overspeed protection device is far from this level.
ProTech adopts a two-out-of-three shutdown mode to ensure that there will be no accidental shutdown caused by an instantaneous failure of one of the three units. Each unit is completely isolated from the other two units except for the connection of the relay. In order to further prevent the occurrence of false shutdown, the power supply used by each speed sensing unit is also independent. ProTech does not involve the effects of mechanical wear, magnetization temperature and operating temperature due to turbine rotation. Because it does not involve the wear and tear of the mechanical rotation part, ProTech can keep the shutdown speed setting value unchanged for a long time. When an overspeed stop occurs, ProTech can record the peak speed reached by the display wheel.
