Modbus is a master-slave protocol in which one device is the master device and all other devices on the Modbus network are the slave devices. The Modbus master can read or write to the device, depending on the capabilities of the slave device.


So what does this have to do with PLC I/O? Many devices such as PLCS, digital meters, SCADA systems, VFDS, and generator set controllers are designed with internal data graphs of input and output points. The device designer can decide how to distribute the data. For example, in my job, I usually read Modbus data from the power meter to my PLC/PAC system so that I can know the kilowatts, voltage, amperes, etc. on the circuit or generator. In this case, the PLC acts as the Modbus master, while the power meter is the Modbus slave. Each device manufacturer sorts the data differently in the Modbus diagram of its devices, but the communication protocol remains the same.


The master device can also write data to the slave device. For example, a PLC can be set up as a Modbus host, writing data to start, stop, or change the speed of a variable frequency drive (VFD).


Although all communication protocols work differently, they are designed for basically the same purpose. Industrial communication devices read analog or discrete values from and write analog or discrete values to other PLCS/devices without having to hardwire each input and output point between PLCS/devices.


Note: Most Allen-Bradley PLC/PACs must communicate over Modbus using a third-party module or gateway device. Companies like Prosoft Technology, Sierra Monitor, and Real Time Automation can buy many of these devices in the market.


As you can see, you can not only connect hardwire inputs and outputs to the PLC, but also read input data from the device and write output data to the device via Modbus and other industrial communication protocols. This versatility allows most PLCS /PACs to interface with virtually any device in an industrial environment.
