The VMC VIMIME-6016 is a single-braced 16-channel serial port controller with a dedicated on-board ring buffer for each channel (bidirectional) and an on-board 25MHz zero-wait state 68020 microprocessor.

The VMEbus interface of the VMVME-6016 is controlled by the VICG68 VMEbus interface controller and can perform system controller functions via a jumper. The 68020 microprocessor handles all character data input, output and buffering, so host driver overhead is kept to a minimum. The USER buffer can be configured as a RING buffer or LNEAR buffer, or as an on-board or off-board resident in the VMEbus global memory
